Progress made on cultural future for Huron County

Huron County's Cultural Development Officer was pleased with the turnout for a recent public meeting looking for input into the next Cultural Plan.

Rick Sickenger says about 65 people attended the meeting on Wednesday night and they represented a cross-section of the cultural groups in the county as well as most geographical regions of the county.

Sickenger says they discussed a wide range of topics, including events and festivals, not just having them -  but also providing guidance to events planners, looking at volunteers, getting more cultural leadership, youth involvement in arts and culture and making sure that they have proper cultural facilities and spaces.

On Thursday, following the public session, staff from various departments in the county also looked at the list the public had generated and did the same exercise and asked what can we do as a county to implement some of these things.

Sickenger says over the summer,  staff will go through the suggestions and continue to consult with the arts and culture sector as well as the public and staff, with the goal of having a draft plan by the fall that they can take back to the public for final tweaking.

The final product will be presented to county council by the end of this year or early next year.
