Province launches survey on animal welfare

The province is asking for input on how to improve animal welfare now that the OSPCA is no longer enforcing animal welfare legislation.

There is a public survey where residents are asked to give feedback on things like who should be responsible for enforcement and inspections.

The Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals stopped enforcing animal welfare legislation in March after an Ontario court judge found it was wrong for the agency to have policing powers without transparency and accountability standards in place.

In the meantime, the province says it has posted a regulation enabling affiliates of the OSPCA like humane societies to continue enforcement until a new model is implemented.
