County looking at congested intersection near Bruce Energy Centre

Traffic congestion in the area of the Bruce Energy Centre is creating a call for improved safety measures.

Cannabis producer 7ACRES has asked Bruce County council to install street lights on Bruce Road 20 at the two Farrell Drive intersections, which loops through the Bruce Energy Centre.

Senior Project Manager Dan Piggott told the county's transportation and environmental services committee that congestion is a growing concern due to increased activity in that area, as Bruce Road 20 serves as the main corridor to the Bruce Power site from Highway 21, while the Bruce Energy Centre businesses, including 7ACRES, are growing rapidly.

He said 7ACRES has worked on easing their own traffic, as they have started a bus service for employees, which runs from Saugeen Shores and Kincardine on a daily basis.

"We have also implemented carpool initiatives, we've staggered shifts to try to decrease the traffic flow at peak times, including rotating schedules and clearly marked our parking lot," said Piggott.

Kincardine Mayor Anne Eadie agreed with the request and noted the area where traffic turns into the Bruce Energy Centre can be prone to periods of poor visibility in the winter, in addition to the congestion.

"For safety, in the morning when there is just a line up of traffic way back and people are trying to get into work and visibility might not be the best, I think a street light would be, if we can afford it, might save somebody's life," said Eadie.

Bruce County's transportation and environmental services staff are seeing quotes for street lights and could table a report as early as next month.
