North Huron council has laid down the law when it comes to the establishment of a council committee to discuss the future of the Howson Dam.
Members of the public had issues with the proposed name, which would have been the Howson Bridge committee because the bridge is not the issue at hand. However, later on, Reeve Bernie Bailey noted the committee is being established to "Give everyone equal opportunity", and added those selected to sit on the committee will be selected on merit.
Deputy Reeve Trevor Seip and Councillor Chris Palmer discussed the future of the committee, and it was agreed upon that the committee would be dissolved once a decision on whether to repair, refurbish or tear down the dam in Wingham. Depending on the outcome of a council vote, a new committee would then be established to raise funds.
"We were just recommending that council design a process so that council can look at all the options and all the facts related to the dam," said Phil.
Bailey has remained staunch in his opposition for doing anything with the dam, and says tax dollars will not be used to refurbish or repair the dam.
