Wiarton Willie predicts early spring

Wiarton Willie did not disappoint the hundreds who gathered to hear his annual Groundhog Day prediction.

The world famous prognosticator awoke from his winter slumber and received thunderous cheers when he did not see his shadow, prompting a prediction of an early spring.

The prediction ceremony had a unique twist this year, as for the first time ever, a sitting premier took part in the event.

Doug Ford received a mix of cheers and boos from the crowd as he took the stage, speaking briefly prior to Willie's prediction.

South Bruce Peninsula Mayor Janice Jackson is Willie's official interpreter and said it was a wild week as municipal staff dealt with the blizzard conditions that shut down the region, then had to plan for Ford's visit with provincial officials.

All in all, she said Ford's visit was more than welcome.

"It was an extra added bonus to have the premier here and yeah, it took a while to organize the arrival and his trip and his safety and it was wonderful," said Jackson. "It was great to have him."

Following the prediction ceremony, Ford shook hands and took selfies with members of the public.
