Owen Sound votes in favour of retail cannabis shops

Owen Sound council has voted to "opt in" allowing cannabis shops in the city.

Councillor Richard Thomas made the motion to allow the cannabis shops, and the vote was 8-1 in favour.

"It doesn't make any sense at all to not allow legal sales within the community," said Thomas. "It's happening all around us. It is the law of the land now as decided by the federal parliament and the law laid down by the provincial government."

But Thomas noted it's going to be a while before you can walk into a pot shop in Owen Sound.

"Given the announcement that there will only be 25 licences issued in April and none to communities under 50,000, I think it's going to be a while before you see a legal cannabis shop in Owen Sound in any case," he said.

Thomas said provincial legislation defines where cannabis shops can, and cannot be located.
