Goderich mayor wants more weekend events in the Square

The mayor of Goderich says if the town is going to grow to its potential, it has to attract more young people.

John Grace told members of the town's BIA Tuesday night that one way to create some excitement in the downtown would be to close the Square to traffic on Friday nights and have music in the grandstand.

Grace suggested that if the council and all of the different organizations in the town made a point of staging their events in the downtown core over the next three years, that would create the kind of vibrancy that would attract people to the Square.

"We need to create that vibrancy, and I can't say it enough, if we do everything that we do in downtown Goderich, we are going to be known as, when you think Southwestern Ontario, you think of downtown Goderich on a Friday night, or a Saturday or a Sunday," said Grace.

Grace said the Square has been a gift to the town, but they need to create the vibrancy and energy so it can realize its potential.
