Employment Law experts answer questions about cannabis legalization

The implications of cannabis legalization and workplace policies will be the subject of a half-day information session in Owen Sound this week.

Employment and labour lawyers will lead the session on Wednesday at Stone Tree Golf and Fitness Club in Owen Sound. It starts at 8:30 a.m. and is sponsored by the Community Drug & Alcohol Strategy.

Last month's sweeping legalization of cannabis has put pressure on municipalities, school boards, boards of health, employers and consumers to understand the health and safety implications. It will have a long-term effect on businesses, workplaces, families, young people, and communities.

Advanced registration is required for Wednesday's session. A registration fee of $50 includes a catered breakfast.

"This training is important for managers who have a responsibility for recognizing safety risks in the workplace", says Barb Fedy, director of Grey County Social Services. "Supervisors need the knowledge to effectively manage situations when they observe employees who are not working safely, while at the same time, employees need to understand their obligations and rights within the new legislation as well."

The information session will address the significance of medical vs. recreational use of cannabis, how to accommodate the use of medical cannabis in the workplace, and when the duty to accommodate is engaged by a substance use disorder.

Community Drug & Alcohol Strategy is a network of over 30 local partners committed to reducing substance-related harms in Bruce and Grey counties.
