Members of the Huron Shores Transit Committee are playing a waiting game.
The committee was formed to look into the potential for a transit system involving the municipalities of Bluewater and South Huron, Parkhill, North Middlesex, Lambton Shores and Kettle Point. It would be modelled after a system in Norfolk County.
Last spring the committee was successful in applying to the Ministry of Transportation for a $2 million grant over five years. But since the change in provincial government earlier this year, the Transit Committee has not been told whether it will still be getting that funding.
Committee Co-Chair Glenn Baillie said they put out a request for proposals and have found a consulting firm that's prepared to do the legwork to find out what kind of a transit system would work here, given the limitations of modest, if any, government subsidy and a modest fee for passenger fees.
Baillie said ultimately it will be the municipalities who decide whether the system is a go or not, so in the next few weeks, members of the committee will be contacting the municipalities directly to determine their interest in moving forward.
