The Avon Maitland District School Board has been selected by the Education Ministry to conduct a pilot program that will help school boards identify and understand their students better.
Project Coordinator Laura Scott explains the survey will include questions about ethnicity, religion or spiritual affiliation, what was the first language they learned to speak as a child, and if they consider themselves a person with a disability.
"The ultimate goal is to really bring clarity to our student population so that we can better understand who our students are and that will eventually inform some board's initiatives and policies so that we can ensure that students are getting what they need," said Scott.
The surveys will be conducted online and during classroom time for students from Grade seven to twelve, and the survey for kindergarten to grade six students will be completed online by their parents at home.
The survey runs from December 3 to 7, and the results will be posted on the board's website, likely sometime in the spring.
