Compensation rules changing for municipal councillors in January

Remuneration and compensation for municipal councillors will be changing soon.

As of January 1, councillors will no longer have one-third of their pay be listed as tax exempt.

North Perth has chosen a new compensation structure.

"Certainly the change is happening at the federal level, but councils have the ability to set their own remuneration as they see fit," said CAO Kris Snell. "Council has decided that they would like to make sure that compensation has no net impact on the new council going forward, so their pay will be adjusted so that it has no net impact on their taxes."

Snell said this will be on an average basis because it’s hard to predict everyone’s different income tax implications. He also says even though that rule is changing as of January 1, councils still have some say.
