Bells of Peace to ring out in St. Marys Sunday

The Bells of Peace will ring out in St. Marys Sunday evening.

The Royal Canadian Legion Perth Regiment Veterans Branch 236 St. Marys and the Town of St. Marys are taking part in Bells of Peace, in recognition of the end of the "War to End All Wars".

Beginning in Newfoundland, bells will ring successively across Canada for four hours, to allow present-day Canadians an opportunity to feel the joy that Canadians would have felt at the end of World War One, when the ringing of bells notified communities of significant events.

In St. Marys, people are asked to gather in Town Hall Square at 4:45 p.m. Sunday for a short service. At 5:04 p.m., bells will ring the 100 tolls at the Town Hall, the Andrews Jewellers Building, St. Marys United Church, and HMCS Stone Town.

HMCS Stone Town’s bell, which is housed at the St. Marys Museum, is being brought to Town Hall for this ceremony.   HMCS Stone Town was a River-class frigate that served with the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War.     She served primarily as a convoy escort in the Battle of the Atlantic.

Residents are also invited to gather for a Ceremony of Remembrance at 10:45 a.m. on Sunday at the Cenotaph beside Town Hall.    Queen Street will be closed from Church Street to Peel Street until 11:15 a.m. to accommodate this service.
