A-C-W approves proposed gravel pit

Councillors in Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh have given three readings to an application for a gravel pit on the Brian Durst farm in the municipality.

Reeve Ben Van Diepenbeek said it meets all the requirements of the official plan, the zoning bylaws, the aggregate study, and the Ministry of Natural Resources criteria. It also satisfied the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority.

"Quite a few neighbours are not happy with it but it's kind of out of our hands now," said Van Diepenbeek. "Once we give it three readings the bylaw's been passed. Now it's open for appeal. There's a 21-day appeal period."

Van Diepenbeek said the municipality did deny a similar application about five years ago that was appealed by the applicant.

It cost the municipality about $100,000 for an OMB hearing.
