Fire Prevention Week a busy time for local firefighters

This is a busy week for firefighters across Canada --  it's Fire Prevention Week.

One of the busiest schedules in the region is in Perth East and West Perth.

Each of the fire stations in the two departments will host an open house. Crews will also be doing door-to-door smoke and CO alarm checks, and staff will be visiting classrooms.

The Mitchell station open house is on Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Milverton station will be open Wednesday night from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. There's an open house Thursday at the Sebringville station from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The open house events offer activities for families, giveaways, a chance to meet firefighters and Sparky, and opportunities to learn about fire safety.

Friday, you can have "Coffee with a Firefighter" at both McDonald's locations in Stratford from 10 a.m. until noon.

On Saturday, it's Sparky's Birthday Party at the Shakespeare Recreation Complex from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The first 100 kids will receive a Sparky Birthday Party Treat Bag.

"We are spreading out the Open House events and adding some new activities," said Fire Chief Bill Hunter. "We are really looking forward to offering these communities more and better opportunities to meet their local firefighters, tour the stations, learn about fire safety and have a lot of fun."
