Goderich mayoral candidates outline their priorities

The three Goderich mayoral candidates faced off in a debate Wednesday night at the Lakeshore United Church.

The common theme was taxes when incumbent Kevin Morrison and challengers John Grace and David Yates were asked about spending priorities.

Morrison pointed out that infrastructure was at the top of his list. He said the town always looks at three major street projects every year and he'd continue that.

"The priorities I think right now is to maintain what we have, enhance on what we have and take a look at what's needed when it comes to new developments when it comes to infrastructure," said Morrison.

John Grace said there are a lot of big issues that are important to the community.

"We have the arena issue and what does that look like," she said. "Do we go ahead and fix Memorial, do we put the second pad on the Maitland Recreation Centre?"

Dave Yates said he is also being told people want to see a hold on their tax rate.

"That's coming through loud and clear as I go door to door," said Yates. "People in town want a hold on their tax rate and they want to see some sort of strategy for the waterfront and the downtown area."

He said they also want the next council to sit down as soon as possible and prioritize their expenditures before they commit to any new projects.
