Driver resists arrest and assaults Huron OPP officer

A 35-year-old resident of Bluewater is facing a half-dozen charges following a suspected impaired driving incident Monday night near Bayfield.

Shortly after 6 p.m., OPP officers, Paramedic Services and Bayfield Fire Department responded to a single-vehicle crash on Wildwood Line.

Officers found a heavily damaged SUV in the ditch along with the driver and a toddler. Both occupants were transported to hospital where they were treated for minor injuries.

While speaking with the female driver, the investigating officer noted the driver was allegedly displaying signs of alcohol impairment. When trying to arrest the accused, she allegedly became combative toward the officers and resisted arrest. She also refused to provide breath samples.

Further investigation revealed the driver had collided with a tree on Elizabeth Street in Bayfield prior to the collision on Wildwood Line. After being released from hospital, the accused spent the night in police custody. Her vehicle was towed and her licence has been suspended for an automatic 90 days.

Jennifer Watts, 35, from Bluewater has been charged with refusing to provide a breath sample, resisting a peace officer, assaulting a peace officer, failing to remain at the scene of a collision, and failing to have an insurance card.

She has a court date of October 15 in Goderich.
