More elementary students attending Avon Maitland schools

The Treasurer for the Avon Maitland District School Board had some good news for trustees at Tuesday night's first meeting of the new school year.

Cheri Carter announced that enrolment in the elementary level was up by about 100 students over last June's estimates. Carter added that's pretty much in line with what's been happening for the last few years but also good news to see that trend continue after several years of declining enrolment.

The news wasn't as good at the secondary level, but she pointed out it's still very early as far as getting a handle on what enrolment might be in November.

"We do a lot of work out of secondary schools these first few weeks in engagement of our students and making sure they're fully time-tabled when they need to be; putting them into some alternate programs, such as our online learning to get the courses that they want; so there's a lot of work happening at the secondary schools right now to get those students placed," explained Carter.

Meanwhile, over 200 students from countries including China, Germany, Italy, Mexico and Vietnam have arrived to attend Avon Maitland schools for the first semester. The board expects at least 30 more international students for the second semester.
