Progress being made on Lake Huron coastal action plan

The Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation is about halfway through its Coastal Action Plan.

Stewardship Coordinator Daniela Klicper explains their goal is to create a unified vision for coastal conservation along the southeastern shoreline of Lake Huron. It's a three-year plan covering over 900 kilometres of shoreline between Sarnia and Tobermory.

The plan involves developing a list of environmental management strategies by identifying valuable features and species, along with threats and stressors that can negatively impact them.

The project includes nine different eco-systems and they're looking at three each year.

"In 2018 we are focusing on coastal wetlands, woodlands and river mouths, so we're in the process of compiling information and gathering data for those three coastal eco-systems," explained Klicper. "Going forward we hope to look at our three last eco-systems, alvars, nearshore and islands."

Klicper said this part of the project is funded through the Ontario Trillium Foundation and once that's completed they'll have to look for funding from other sources to implement the recommendations that come out of this part of the project.
