Overdose Awareness Day marked in Owen Sound

The dangers of drug abuse were highlighted at an event in Owen Sound marking International Overdose Awareness Day.

The Grey Bruce Health Unit organized a free barbecue at the Safe N' Sound drop-in centre in Owen Sound. Burgers and hot dogs were served up along with information about the dangers of drug use.

Safe N' Sound's Connie McKay said the event is to remember the loved ones lost and acknowledge the grief felt by friends, family and the community as a whole.

"It could be my family, it could be your family, it could be the neighbour next door so if we can take that stigma out it becomes more of a universal issue where we all want to take part in helping people to be safe," said McKay.

She added the aim is to raise awareness and spread the message that the tragedy of overdose death is preventable.
