Port Elgin Man Charged For Online Dating Harassment

A Port Elgin man is facing criminal charges following a police investigation into online dating sites.

Hamilton police opened an investigation several months ago after receiving a harassment complaint from a Hamilton woman.

The victim met the Port Elgin man online in 2012.  Police allege that between 2014 and 2018 the man sent over 100 text messages to the victim. He also used an online alias during his contact with the woman. He later allegedly threatened to send her personal and private information to her family for his own personal gain.

Through the police investigation, a second victim from Kitchener was identified.

Last Friday, Hamilton detectives with the assistance of the Saugeen Shores Police Department arrested 46-year-old George Condy of Port Elgin. He is charged with criminal harassment and extortion and is scheduled to appear in court on June 22.

Police believe there are more victims who have been harassed but have not come forward.

If you think you are a victim or have any further information, call Detective Chambers or Detective Constable Mendes at (905) 546-3817.

Police encourage anyone participating in online dating sites to exercise caution when sharing personal information.
