Mayor of Saugeen Shores Not Seeking Re-Election

The mayor of Saugeen Shores will not be seeking a fourth term this fall.

Mike Smith says he will not put his name on the ballot during the October municipal election, announcing he will be retiring from the job he has held since 2006.

He says it's simply time to move on after more than 20 years in municipal politics, dating back to pre-amalgamation with the former Saugeen Township council, adding he's looking forward to spending time with his grandchildren.

Looking back on the projects completed during his tenure as mayor, Smith says the credit belongs to municipal staff.
"Any accomplishment that I have had anything to do with has been a lot to do with the staff of this town, I think we have fabulous staff," says Smith. "We've had some great councils with some great ideas, but it's the staff really that makes these things happen and help build the community."
Only one candidate has filed so far to run for the mayor's job in Saugeen Shores.  Current Deputy Mayor Luke Charbonneau announced his campaign last week.
