South Bruce Peninsula Councillor Feels She's Being Bullied

A South Bruce Peninsula councillor is considering resigning her seat after bringing forward claims of being harassed by other members of council.

Ana Vukovic rose on a point of personal privilege during Tuesday's council meeting, accusing Mayor Janice Jackson and Councillor Matt Jackson of bullying her, following a closed-door meeting earlier in the day.

Vukovic says council was discussing an organizational review and when they emerged to open session to vote on the recommendations, she voted against them, allegedly prompting the confrontation with the other council members.

"Matt [Jackson] called me 'idiot', he called me 'psycho', the mayor took off and it was just a harassment to me, 'How can you do this? Why would you vote this, why didn't you vote this way?'" says Vukovic. "It was just unbelievable."

Mayor Jackson refused to allow Vukovic's point of privilege to stand, claiming any discussions with Vukovic were private, unrelated to council business and occurred after council had adjourned.

"No, any words that were exchanged were outside of all council meetings, it had nothing to do with the closed meeting, it had nothing to do with the meeting we just sat through," says Jackson. "It was completely independent of council, it's frustrating."

Vukovic claims the harassment has been building recently, to the point now where she's considering stepping down.

"This is getting to the point [of], you know, me resigning because I cannot sit here and take this anymore," says Vukovic. "I will think about it because everybody has their level of tolerance and I think mine is just about to that point."

Vukovic says she's unlikely to pursue her complaint any further, pointing out a code of conduct complaint would likely go before council in closed session and wouldn't achieve anything.
