'Legally Blonde' Debuts At Blyth Theatre

A special production opens to the public at the Blyth Theatre Thursday night.

Studio 410 out of Teeswater presents "Legally Blonde" with young actors and actresses from across the area.

Mildmay's Lucy Muir portrays Elle Woods and says being able to perform at the historic Blyth Theatre is special.

"It's been amazing. Originally we wanted to do it in Teeswater, but that didn't work out. But having the opportunity to do this in Blyth, it's such a beautiful theatre, and I'm just so lucky to be in it," she says.

Muir says that the process of tapping into the character of Elle has been a great experience.

"It's been really fun. Elle is just such a positive person, I think her main thing is she just sees the best in everyone and every situation. She comes from a privileged background, but she uses that to lift other people up, and she doesn't think she's better than anyone else," says Muir.

The production is being co-directed by sisters Paige and Devan Ballagh, and their younger brother Matthew is playing the role of Emmett Forest across from Lucy. Paige says there are challenges bringing a movie into a theatre setting, where things move much quicker.

"It's been wild, like it's a very full musical," says Paige. "It was a Broadway musical, so we're doing the junior version, a condensed version, so that means all of a sudden changes are much quicker, scene changes, costume changes, everything is just on fast forward."

Devan says that working with so many close friends and family, and inspiring new young performers, has been a great experience.

"We have generations of family connections, and it's also because Paige and I grew up performing together, I think it's so special and very emotional at times that we're sitting back watching these kids come out on to the stage and seeing their connections, knowing that that did so much for us, and our relationship," says Devan.

The show features young actors and actresses from around the area. Shows are Thursday and Friday nights at 7pm and Saturday and Sunday at 2pm. Tickets will be available online at Studio410.ca and at the door.
