Huron Still Waiting For Details Of National Housing Strategy

Huron County's Housing Services manager says they are still waiting for the details of a national housing strategy that was announced late last year.

Barb Hall explains that in November, the federal government announced a $40-billion plan aimed at creating new affordable units, repairing and renewing existing units, protecting the affordability of households currently supported in subsidized units, and lifting Canadian households out of core housing need.

Hall says they still don't know how much money each of the 47 service manager areas in Ontario will be getting but it is a clear acknowledgement by the government of the need for more affordable housing.

Hall adds the strategy is also a recognition of housing rights as human rights by identifying measures to ensure Canadians have access to adequate housing. The federal government is looking to accomplish this through the introduction of new legislation and reporting requirements, as well as the establishment of new federal advocates and a national housing council.
