Update as of 1:15pm:

Hydro One says there are strong winds sweeping Ontario and the gusty southwest wind is expected to continue tonight and into tomorrow.

From 9:25am:

Hydro One crews are dealing with a number of power outages across Midwestern Ontario today.

The strong wind may be a factor in causing the failures.

The largest outage is in the Meaford-Thornbury area.    Several thousand homes, businesses, farms, and some schools are without electricity.

St Vincent-Euphrasia Public School, Georgian Bay Community Elementary and Georgian Bay Community Secondary School in Meaford are closed because of the outage.    Beaver Valley Community School in the Town of the Blue Mountains is closed as well.

Hydro One crews are also working to restore power to areas around Ayton, Port Elgin and Dungannon.
