Arena Malfunction Rumors In Listowel Put On Ice

Rumors of a massive malfunction at the new arena in Listowel are false.

North Perth Director of Parks and Recreation Steve Hardie says that it isn't true that a compressor blew in the rink, which would have pushed back the December 9 grand opening.

"It's just rumors going around town. What actually happened was the initial startup for the compressors for the refrigeration system, one of the electric motors failed and that's something that happens from time to time, bad windings in a motor," he says. "So that was replaced very quickly within a couple days and everything is up and running fine."

Hardie says there will be no hitch in the plans for the grand opening, which will feature the Listowel Cyclones first ever game at the rink at 7:30pm against Stratford. Hardie also notes they are putting ice in today, and the new rink has far better refrigeration capacity than the old one.

"To pull the floor temperature down, and maintain that temperature, we can easily do that," says Hardie. "Time is on our side, the weather right now is on our side, and we don't foresee any issues at all with the rink at this point."
