Development Charges Authorized In Bluewater

The municipality of Bluewater has passed a bylaw authorizing development charges. Mayor Tyler Hessel says the charges were implemented at a fifty per cent rate starting on August 22nd and will go to 100 per cent in 2018.

Hessel says the fee will vary depending on the village where the development is taking place and the services being provided. Hessel points out Bluewater wouldn't be in the position it's in now with infrastructure if a development charge had been implemented five or ten years ago.

He also points out that more and more municipalities are going to development charges because they have become an important factor in borrowing money from the Province for infrastructure.

“Starting August 22nd, fifty per cent of the development charges and then in the new year it would be 100 per cent of the full development charges. They do range depending on the community in which you live and the services we provide and they go against the uh.. lot when you decide to apply for your building permit.”

When it comes to your balance books for borrowing money for infrastructure the Province is looking at that as is there another sustainable part of your budget that will help subsidize your development and investment in infrastructure.”
