Meaford Council Exploring Possible Library Sites

Meaford council wants to take a closer look at a possible site for its library before making their final choice.

On Monday, Meaford’s committee of the whole recommended that council adopt a Feasibility Study drawn up by LGA Architectural Partners. The study is to serve as a guiding document for making decisions on space allocations for library uses.

Council hired LGA Architectural Partners last October to make a detailed study of a building at 390 Sykes St. N in urban Meaford. Cooperators Insurance and the Grey County OPP detachment share the building.

The municipality is considering the building at 390 Sykes St. N as one of two possible sites for Meaford Public Library. The library is housed in an aging building at 15 Trowbridge St.

Council is also interested in the possibility of moving the library to the former Foodland building at 15 Sykes St. N.

So, in the same resolution the committee recommended that council direct staff to hire LGA Architectural Partners again. This time, LGA is to complete a facility condition assessment, cost analysis and architectural drawings of the former Foodland building. The study will cost almost $33,000.

Deputy Mayor Harley Greenfield said he was “very pleased” to see council seriously interested in the Foodland site.

Councillor Tony Bell called the study “an absolute must” if council is to make the right decision on which site would be better as the Library’s future home. Council passed the resolution unanimously.
