Central Huron Council received a presentation Monday night regarding a proposed Huron County residential hospice. The presentation was made by Kathy O'Reilly and Shirley Dinsmore.
O'Reilly, the co-chair of the Huron County Hospice Palliative Care Steering Committee, says that a hospice for Huron County is becoming a necessity.
"Currently people who are seeking a hospice in Huron County have to go to London, and that's if they can even get into St. Joseph's because of their demand there," she says. "They can also go to Sakura House in Woodstock, or all the way to Owen Sound."
O'Reilly says hospice projects are already being looked at in Stratford and Exeter. She says an ideal site for the hospice would be a centralized location for Huron and Perth residents. She also states the choice of having a hospice in Huron County would be a great benefit to the municipality.
"I think that Huron County residents deserve better when it comes to end-of-life care," she says. "That's not at all a reflection of the great services provided today in our hospitals, in our long-term care or our retirement homes. I just think the choice should be there."
Huron Hospice is holding a public info session on Thursday at the Lucknow Presbyterian Church at 7pm.
