Driver Turns Himself In After Hit-And-Run Near Stratford

An arrest has been made in the hit-and-run incident earlier this week near Stratford that left a cyclist badly injured.

A 22-year-old Stratford man was knocked off his bike and into a ditch after being hit by a passing vehicle Monday evening on Hwy. 7/8 between Stratford and Shakespeare.

A tip from the public late Tuesday sent officers to a property in Shakespeare, where they found a pickup truck with front-end damage and a missing passenger side mirror.  Police seized a 2000 GMC Sonoma pickup, but were unable to find the owner.

Wednesday evening, the registered owner of the pickup contacted police and turned himself in at the Sebringville OPP detachment.

David Cleaveley, 33, of Stratford has been charged with failing to stop at the scene of a crash causing bodily harm.  He was released on a promise to appear in court and will be back in Stratford court October 17.

OPP forensic experts plan to execute a warrant to search the pickup truck on Friday.
