24th Annual Grey-Bruce Charity Golf Event Tees Off

Thursday marks the 24th annual Grey-Bruce Crime Stoppers charity golf event.

The tournament, which raises funds to help support Crime Stoppers and keep it running, is being held this year at the Chippewa Golf Course just outside of Port Elgin. Among the many local golfers who came out to take part, some celebrity guests were in attendance as well.

NHL Hall of Famer and coach Adam Oates donated some of his time to come and support the event.

"I think any charity you can help is great, and they asked me to come out and it worked with my schedule. Crime Stoppers is a vital part of our communities, they help to prevent and solve crimes, and they need help to stay active," says Oates. "I think any hockey player who was free would generally come help out any event like this, and I'm excited to be here."

Asked how his golf game is, Oates wasn't shy to admit it isn't his thing.

"Oh, I'm terrible," Oates laughed. "My clubs all had dust on them, I barely play, I don't even have a putter. I may need some pointers out there."

Hard to imagine from one of the best passers in hockey history.

Also in attendance was former NHL and KHL goalie Curtis Sanford.

Many local business groups help out with the event every year, as well. Tournament organizer and Trillium Mutual rep Paula Culbert says it's great to be involved with the event.

"Trillium likes to support local businesses and charities, and so we felt Grey-Bruce Crime Stoppers and their golf event was a great thing to help organize," she says. "They're a vital organization in these communities and we are happy to help."

On top of a great day of golf, there are many other activities going on.

"We have contests for closest to the pin, longest drive, we also have a slam dunk contest this year," notes Culbert, "and we will also be doing a silent and live auction, and a great steak dinner afterwards for all our guests."
