Huron Food Action Network Wants Food Charter Adopted

The Huron Food Action Network is encouraging every municipality in the County to get more involved in local food policy.

Local Food System Co-ordinator Nathan Swartz made presentations at both Central Huron and Bluewater council meetings last night.

Swartz explains there is a food system in place, but it largely targets imports and exports. He says what they hope to do is make it easier for local producers to get their products to local consumers.

Swartz points out one part of the system that works well is Farmer's Markets.   But they'd like to expand that to include local processing and local distribution systems.

Swartz adds it would help if local grocery stores had the authority to make local buying decisions. While some do, the majority have no say in where they must purchase their products from.
