Owen Sound's Connor Roberts Excited For OHL Gold Cup

Owen Sound will have a high end representative at this year's OHL Gold Cup.

Roberts was taken 3rd overall by the Hamilton Bulldogs in this year's OHL Priority Selection Draft, and will take part in the annual U-16 showcase, the Gold Cup.

The tournament is run by the Ontario Hockey Federation in partnership with the OHL, as well as Hockey Canada. It serves as a look at the best U-16 talent in Ontario, and Hockey Canada brass will be observing players, with invited to this summer's U-17 camp on the line. Of the 160 players participating for 8 different regional associations, 126 were picked by OHL teams this past Saturday. Roberts, who will suit up for team OMHA Black, says he's excited to take part in the prestigious tournament.

"I'm excited to play in this tournament, with lots of high level skill, it's going to be really fun."

Some notable participants in past tournaments, which have been held annually since 2012, include Dylan Strome, Travis Konecny, and Lawson Crouse. 15 of the top 20 OHL 1st round picks will attend the tournament this year alongside Roberts and 1st overall pick Ryan Merkley.

Roberts says he's proud to join the Bulldogs organization, where he will join an impressive groupthat already features Matthew Strome, Brandon Saigeon and Mackenzie Entwistle.

"They're a great organization, a lot of great young talent, and I'm looking forward to playing with those guys and making a mark in the OHL."

Being from Owen Sound, and developing through the Grey-Bruce Highlanders program, Roberts also spoke about getting the opportunity in the coming season to play at the Bayshore against the Attack.

"That will be really special, being from there, everyone knows everyone, it's a small community. We went to Attack games all the time on weekends, and it will be a dream come true to play there, for sure."
