The only woman in the eight-person Wellington North by-election Monday won the seat on council.
Lisa Hern ran once before in Ward 3 in 2010, losing by just a couple of votes. She won Monday with 170 votes, 12 more than her closest rival Jens Dam with 158.
The by-election was caused by the resignation of Councillor Mark Goetz.
Stephen O’Neil was in third place with 89 votes and former councillor Ross Chaulk fourth with 36 votes. The other four candidates each had less than 20 votes.
The turnout for the Wellington North by-election Monday was more than five percent above the turnout at the last full municipal election in 2014. The 517 votes cast this time were about 100 more than last time.
CAO Mike Givens says the increase may be a result of trying a mail in vote, and Wellington North voters may see the mail-in ballot again in future elections.
