Staff at the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority is asking for the public's help in learning more about turtles.
Healthy Watershed Technician Hope Brock says seven of the eight species of turtles commonly found in Ontario are considered species at risk.
One way they can learn more about them and protect them is identifying where they are.
So they're asking people who see a turtle to call or email them with the turtle's location and a description if they don't know exactly what kind of turtle it is.
Brock adds turtles are most often seen in the spring and early summer when they leave the water to find a nesting areas and they're particularly vulnerable when crossing roads.
She says small turtles can easily be picked up and put down in the direction they were moving in, but larger snapping turtles can be a challenge.
Brock says they can be picked up by the back of the their shells and dragged across the road, or dragged on a blanket or car mat or carried on a shovel.
