A St. Thomas man charged with attempted murder in the shooting of his partner is now accused of killing the family dog.
St. Thomas police said on Wednesday that, through consultation with forensic veterinarian services, it has confirmed the dog found dead at an apartment on Talbot Street near Elgin Street on May 16 died from a gunshot.
Police originally went to the apartment in response to multiple 911 calls about a disturbance. There they found a 24-year-old woman suffering from a gunshot wound. She was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The deceased animal was discovered in the apartment shortly after by investigators.
A man who had taken off from the scene before police arrived was arrested a short time later on Hiawatha Street. A loaded gun was seized, police said at the time.
A 40-year-old man was charged with attempted murder, possession of a firearm contrary to a probation order, possession of a loaded firearm, and carrying a concealed weapon. He now faces an additional charge of killing an animal.
The accused, who LondonNewsToday.ca has chosen not to name in order to protect the identity of the victim, appeared in court in relation to the new charge on Wednesday. He has been remanded into custody.
