Lightning win NBL Canada championship title second year in a row, sixth overall

The London Lightning are the champions of the National Basketball League of Canada (NBLC) for the second year in a row.

During Game 5 of the final series on Friday night, the Lightning defeated the Windsor Express 126-88.

The Lightning started out strong against the Express, finishing with a modest 25-19 lead during the first quarter. Windsor trailed 11 points behind London in second as the two teams headed into halftime with London ahead 48-37.

Heading into the second half of the game, the Express continued to trail behind the Lightning. London continued to outmanoeuvre Windsor with a pair of successful free throws by Jeremiah Mordi early into third, followed by a third with just 18 seconds left in the third frame, giving the Lightning a 33 point lead of 97-64.

The Express felt the heat in the final quarter, and despite jump shots from Windsor's Jachai Taylor and Jason Calliste, the Lightning maintained a fierce defence. A three point jump shot with 46 seconds left in the game by Mordi solidifed the Lightning's sweep of the Express.

Windsor's Latin Davis put up an impressive 20 points for the team, while Billy White supported his team with 11 rebounds and seven assists.

Mordi was the Lightning's top scorer, securing 37 points for London, while Mike Nuga assisted with 23 points.

This is the London Lightning's sixth championship title win in franchise history.
