Careless smoking cause of $50K basement fire

Two people and a dog had to be rescued from a basement apartment fire in east London.

The blaze broke out at a home that has been converted into apartments at 62 Sackville Street, just north of Hamilton Road around 10:45 p.m. Monday.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the home and escorted two people from the main floor to safety. A dog was rescued from the basement. No injuries were reported.

Fire crews were able to extinguish the blaze within half an hour.

"A coordinated and strategic offensive fire attack is credited to the quick extinguishment," the London Fire Department said in a social media post.

Damage is estimated at $50,000.

Investigators have determined the cause of the fire was careless smoking.
