Apartment fire in central London briefly displaces residents

Residents of a London apartment were temporarily displaced from their units after a fire broke out early Sunday morning.

Firefighters responded to the blaze at an apartment building located at 59 Ridout Street at around 6:40 a.m. on Sunday.

The fire was quickly knocked down, according to the London Fire Department (LFD) on Twitter.

Primary and secondary searches, as well as ventilation efforts got underway shortly after crews arrived.

Officials said two dogs were rescued by firefighters and one person was assessed on the scene by paramedics.

A London Transit bus was brought on the scene for displaced tenants to keep warm while they waited to be allowed back into their apartments.

No injuries were reported.

Through investigation by the LFD Fire Inspectors and consultation from the Office of the Fire Marshall, the cause of the fire was determined as a faulty battery pack of an e-bike, or electric bicycle.

Damages were estimated at $50,000.
