Woman critically hurt in London apartment fire

A fire near London's Old East Village sent a woman to hospital with critical injuries early Friday.

The blaze broke out at a three-storey walk-up apartment building at 571 Adelaide Street North, north of Rosedale Street around 1:20 a.m.

Firefighters arrived on scene to find heavy smoke coming from the third floor of the building. A woman was rescued from a unit on that floor, according to the London Fire Department. She was taken to hospital with injuries described as critical.

A cat was killed in the blaze.

Damage is estimated at $75,000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by fire officials and the London police street crime unit. The Ontario Fire Marshal's Office has also been notified and is expected to be on scene later in the day Friday.
