Man stabbed in vehicle while stopped at a train crossing downtown

London police are investigating after one person was stabbed in his vehicle while stopped at a train crossing on Richmond Row Tuesday afternoon.

The incident occurred in the area of Richmond and Piccadilly streets sometime before 2:30 p.m., police said.

According to investigators, emergency crews responded to a 911 call and were told a man sitting in the drivers side of a vehicle was stopped at the train crossing on Richmond near Piccadilly, when an unknown man entered his vehicle, stabbed him and took off.

The victim was taken to hospital with critical injuries, police said. No other details about his current status are available.

Following the assault, which police believe is random in nature, officers canvassed the area for the suspect. The accused remains outstanding as of early Tuesday evening. A motive for the stabbing is unknown.

The suspect is described as a dark-skinned man. He was wearing a black hat, dark sweater or coat, tight, dark-coloured jeans, black boots and a white medical mask.

The ordeal resulted in a heavy police presence in the downtown-area Tuesday afternoon.

Prior to a media release being issued about the incident, Media Relations Officer Cst. Sandasha Bough confirmed to LondonNewsToday.ca that officers were conducting a weapons investigation in the area, after one person was transported to hospital with unknown injuries.

Police blocked off part of Piccadilly Street, just east of Richmond Street to investigate.
