Talbot Street closing for more downtown St. Thomas renovations

Starting Monday, a busy section of Talbot Street in downtown St. Thomas will be closed for several months.

As the city works to create a “pedestrian-friendly environment,” residents can expect to see more trees, plants, benches, and streetlights along Talbot Street after this phase of construction. Crews will also be working on restoring underground infrastructure.

The Talbot Street closure will extend from Hincks Street to Princess Ave. Motorists will be directed along a detour using Hincks Street, Centre Street, and St. Catharine's to keep traffic out of the area.

While this stretch of Talbot is less than 500 metres long, it is home to several of the city’s key locations including Holy Angels Parish, Yurek Pharmacy, Bella Jacks Mexican Cantina, and the downtown Shoppers Drug Mart.

Keeping storefronts available to the public will be a priority, according to the project report, and the city plans to maintain accessibility whenever and wherever possible.

This stage of the project is projected to be completed by July.

Immediately following, crews will work on an adjacent section of Talbot Street, extending from City Hall to Ross Street. During this time, drivers will be detoured along Horton Street, Kains Street, and Mondamin Street.

The second stage should wrap up in October, according to city officials.
