Sunday brings slew of small fires across London

The London Fire Department had a busy weekend, responding to at least five emergency incidents throughout the city on Sunday alone.

During the day, a shed caught fire on Cleveland Ave in the southeast end. Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames before too much damage was caused to the adjacent garage on the property.

Later Sunday evening, crews attended a north London apartment complex at 112 Arbour Glen Crescent and discovered a burning plastic bag in one of the stairwells. A large amount of black smoke was produced which prompted crews to ventilate the building. Members of the fire service remained on the scene to provide residents with instructions.

A vehicle fire led to the closure of Highway 402 eastbound at Wonderland Road just after 7:30 p.m. The London Fire Department said there was heavy smoke in the area.

Around the same time, more London firefighters responded to a basement fire on Devron Crescent. The fire was quickly extinguished and crews performed both a primary and secondary search.

Just before 9 p.m., hundreds of residences around London's Highland and Southcrest neighbourhoods were without power, and the fire department was sent to help a number of people who were stuck in elevators as a result of the outage.

No injuries were immediately reported in any of these incidents.

This series of small incidents comes after a major fire at the former London Psychiatric Hospital on Saturday which left one of the city's historic buildings with significant damages.
