Teen killed in Aylmer grain elevator fall remembered as 'bright light'

An 18-year-old who died after falling into a grain elevator in Aylmer is being remembered for his beaming personality and the passion with which he completed his work.

Elgin Feeds confirmed in a social media post the teen, whom it identifies as Ryan Laarman, had worked for the business part-time for the past three years.

Laarman died Wednesday in a workplace accident.

"Our hearts are deeply saddened for his parents, grandparents, brother and sisters, along with his many friends, co-workers and extended family members," officials with Elgin Feeds posted. "Ryan was a bright light with a beaming personality who did his job with passion and enthusiasm."

The company added that he was a "beloved employee and family member" and a student at St. Thomas Community Christian School.

Emergency crews were called to Elgin Feeds at 26 Beech St. around 10:45 a.m. after the 18-year-old employee who was working in the grain elevator lost his footing and fell into the shaft. He was taken to St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital where he later died from his injuries, Aylmer police said.

“[The] Ministry of Labour was notified and will be attending to conduct an investigation,” police added. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and co-workers during this difficult time.”

Elgin Feeds closed the mill and store immediately following the incident. It will remain closed on Thursday to honour its lost employee and to give staff time to grieve, officials said.
