Visitors now welcome at London airport ice rink

If you've been itching for a fun winter outing with family or friends, the London International Airport might have what you are looking for.

A new community ice rink has been built and is now ready to use.

The hockey rink is free to the public.

Visitors are welcome from 7 a.m. - 9 p.m. daily, weather permitting. The area is equipped with ample lighting for those interested in a nighttime skate-session.

"Due to fluctuations in outdoor temperatures, it won’t always be properly frozen, so please plan your visit when we’ve had a few days of cold temperatures," said a statement from airport staff.

The area will not be supervised, so visitors will skate at their own risk.

As a safety precaution, the airport says children 5 and under will be required to wear a Canadian Standards Association (CSA) approved helmet. The one exception to this rule is that those 3 months and younger don't need a helmet if they are in a stroller. However, the airport recommends all skaters wear protective head gear.

The rink is located on the north end of airport grounds:

The address to use for GPS is 2179 Flying Club Road.

"I enjoy playing hockey and skating with my family so I thought this would be a great way to utilize the space we have on our property. It’s a way to give back to the community and provide a fun and safe place for staff, tenants and the public to skate.” said Scott McFadzean, president and CEO of the airport.

The community ice rink is the latest in a series of developments that hopes to bring more foot traffic to the airport property.

London International Airport opened a pickleball court last summer. About one year ago, the airport also launched YXU Air Park, where guests can enjoy a scenic view of planes taking off and landing at the airport.
