One person killed in east London house fire

A woman pulled from a house fire in east London Sunday night has died.

The London Fire Department confirmed the fatality Monday morning.

"We want to extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends and all those impacted by the fatal fire on Tremont Road," the fire department said on social media.

Fire crews were called to the burning single-storey home at 238 Tremont Rd. near Marconi Boulevard and Trafalgar Street shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday.

Upon arrival, firefighters were notified that one person was unaccounted for. A sudden change in fire condition briefly kept crews outside of the home. They commenced a search once the fire was under control and found a woman inside.

"Life-saving efforts were provided to the woman by emergency crews on scene, but were unsuccessful, and she succumbed to her injuries," said London police.

The name and age of the woman have not been released.

The Ontario Fire Marshal's Office was notified and will be joining local fire investigators and police in probing the cause of the fire. Investigators are expected to remain on scene throughout the day Monday.

This is the second fatal fire in the region in less than a week. A woman was killed in a late-afternoon apartment fire at 17 Mitchell Street in St. Thomas last Thursday. The cause of that fire remains under investigation, but it is not believed to be suspicious.
