London man charged with assaulting Huron County OPP officers

A man from London is facing serious charges after two OPP officers were assaulted while running a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) program.

Early Thursday morning, Huron County OPP officers were conducting a RIDE check in the area of Blyth Road and Brussels Line in Huron East.

Around 12:20 a.m., an SUV entered the checkpoint and evidence of alcohol consumption was observed within the vehicle, according to police. The driver provided a roadside breath sample which reportedly registered as a "fail," prompting officers to place the man under arrest.

When attempting to handcuff the driver, police allege he became "verbally abusive" and resisted arrest. The man, who was wearing steel-toed boots at the time, reportedly kicked the police cruiser and two officers who suffered minor injuries. The man was eventually placed in the back of the cruiser and taken to the Huron County OPP detachment in Clinton for processing.

A 34-year-old London man is now facing several charges in relation to the incident, including impaired driving, uttering threats, resisting arrest, and two counts of assaulting a police officer.

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Goderich on March 6.
