Bissell wet/dry vacuum recalled over fire concerns

A popular cordless wet-dry vacuum is being recalled due to concerns the battery pack can overheat and potentially catch fire.

Health Canada issued the recall on Thursday for the Bissell Cordless Multi-Surface Wet Dry Vacuum. The recall applies to model number 2551, which is visible when the clean water tank is removed. The word "BISSELL” is printed on the foot of the vacuum, which also has a UPC of 011120247633.

The company has received at least 61 reports of a burning smell and smoke coming from the vacuum's battery pack, including six reported incidents in Canada as of December 20. In the U.S., there have been three incidents in which the battery caught fire, injuring one person.

"Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled product and contact Bissell to obtain a free battery pack replacement," Health Canada said in a statement. "Consumers can either take the product to a local Bissell authorized service center for a free battery pack replacement or schedule a free in-home repair visit from an authorized service technician to replace the existing battery pack."

Information about obtaining a free battery pack replacement can be found on the company website or by calling Bissell toll-free at 1-855-739-1702 between 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Friday or between 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays.
