Pedestrian hit, killed by train on Maitland Street

A pedestrian has died after being hit by a freight train near downtown London.

Emergency crews were called to the rail crossing on Maitland Street south of York Street where the pedestrian was struck by a westbound CN train around 6 a.m. on Wednesday.

The pedestrian was taken to hospital where they later died from their injuries, London police said. The pedestrian's name and age have not been released.

The rail crossing lights and arms were activated at the time of the collision. However, thick fog that prompted a fog advisory from Environment Canada was creating visibility issues across the region.

The train was stopped on the tracks blocking rail crossings between Ridout and Egerton streets.

London police, along with CN Rail Police, are expected to remain on scene throughout the morning as the investigation into the collision continues.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call police at 519-661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
