Driver charged after vehicle strikes concrete median, streetlight

A St. Thomas man faces charges after a vehicle struck a number of stationary structures near downtown London early Friday morning.

At around 3:45 a.m., London police were called about a crash on Wellington Street near South Street. During the incident a vehicle was travelling south on Wellington when it struck a concrete median in the middle of the street. The driver reportedly kept going before hitting a streetlight on the west side of the road.

Police say the driver then got out of the vehicle and ran off. A witness called police and provided them with a description of an adult man and where he was last seen.

Officers arrested a suspect man a short time later near Baseline Road West and Ridout Street. No injuries have been reported.

As a result, the 48-year-old St. Thomas man is charged with impaired driving, exceeding a blood alcohol concentration above the legal limit and failure to remain on the scene of a crash. Police say damages estimated at $7,000.

The accused is scheduled to appear in a London courtroom on January 17, 2023.
